Tier Descriptions
(Not all clubs have all the Categories)
Social Players (below 3 PPR)
The social player is someone who may or may not have played the game before but play it for the fun of the sport. Normally players will move through this category fast. This category gives space for those who want to take their time and learn the game. If you have never played the game of cornhole before, this is your place to start! The player is this category will have trouble hitting the board let alone sticking it on the board
Tier 3 – Beginners (3 – 5.5 PPR)
“Backyard Penguins” is our Tier 3 Beginner level of players. These beginner players are wanting to learn, enjoy, and explore the game of cornhole for the fun of the sport. Generally, this level of player is new to the game or may have thrown bags in their backyard. If you have never played the game of cornhole before, this is your place to start!
The progression of this tier will see players going from having very little control over where the bag is going, and the bag often misses the board to players developing a feel for the distance needed to toss the bag but will have trouble consistently hitting and staying on the board. Typically, this level of player is in the beginning stages of developing a consistent throwing motion that can be repeated. The goal of the “Backyard Penguins” league is to provide a social outlet where players can socialize while learning to play the game of cornhole and support each other’s skill development and gameplay strategy as they grow their skills in the sport of cornhole. Ultimately, the Association would love all our Penguins to grow their wings and begin to fly the coop, aka move up into the Tier 2 “Backyard Pigeons” level.
Ladies League (Regina only)
Ladies’ nights at the SCL are our non-competitive ladies only cornhole nights. The primary focus is on socialize, learning the overall cornhole gameplay, and cornhole skill development. The goal of SCA Ladies’ night is to provide a social outlet where women can socialize and support each other’s skill development and game play while growing their individual skills in the sport of cornhole. SCA Ladies’ want all women to come out and play cornhole! Weather you’re a lady who’s a beginner to cornhole or a lady who also plays in one of our other tiers, ALL ARE WELCOME!
Our inaugural ladies’ night kicked off on September 11, 2023. The primary goal of the Ladies night was and continues to be, providing a social environment for ladies while teaching and supporting each other’s skill development. Each ladies’ league season concludes with a social celebration with numerous great awards and prizes.
Additional Information:
Doubles Play – Players alternate partners during a 3-game round robin, going into a double elimination doubles bracket. These games permit more time for the new players to learn from the experienced players, while keeping a nice pace of play that aims to be fair to both new and experienced players.
Singles Play – Single player games, competing head-to-head against your fellow ladies’ league opponents, for a 3-game round robin, then going into the double elimination bracket. These games permit more time for players to sharpen their skills, while playing both ends and sides of the cornhole board.
Ladies Season Awards – to honor our ladies and their achievements throughout the season the ladies have developed a variety of awards. Each season the SCL ladies vote for the lady who is best suited for each of the awards noted below.
Awards are given out at season wind-up.
Sportsmanship – the lady or ladies who enjoy the sport for its own sake and with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one’s competitors.
Most improved – the lady or ladies who made noticeable growth and progress in their performance.
Lady Coach – A passionate individual who unlocks potential in others by guiding skill development and strategy of the sport to improve others performance.
Glow Girl – the lady or ladies with a positive, vibrant energy. They glow every time you see them, constantly keeping a smile on their face and everyone else’s as well.st
Tier 2 – Pigeons
“Backyard Pigeons” is our Tier 2, intermediate level of player. These players have a solid understanding of the game and most of the game strategy. They might have just left the beginner level or be towards an intermediate skill level with their ability to carry out their intended gameplay. They may struggle with consistency and accuracy in their shots and are working to develop consistent and accurate game skills and strategy. At times, these players look unstoppable and like they can beat anyone, but in a subsequent game they can struggle. Some players may even go from a 4 Baggers to a Floor Baggers in a subsequent round.
The goal of the tier 2 “Pigeons” league is multifaceted. Ultimately, the Association and players would love all our Pigeons to fly the coop, aka move up into the Tier 1 “Hawks” level. However, everyone enjoys the social comradery, support, and guidance in each other’s game play, skills, and strategy provided by players in this tier.
Tier 1 Hawks
Tier 1 “Hawks” is our Tier 1 competitive level of players. These players have a solid understanding of all aspects of the game and game strategy. They are at the intermediate towards advanced skill level with a higher ability to carry out their intended gameplay. In the heat of the moment, these fierce competitors may struggle with selecting the most effective game strategy to defeat their competitors. Yet, as true competitors, they are aware of their competition’s skill level, and to be successful, they strategically adjust their game play based on their competitor. These players have noticeable precision, consistency, and accuracy in their shots, often competing at the “Competitive” or “Advanced” level, and likely play and practice on a regular basis. These players might be called upon to assist with the coaching of new players, players in other tiers, as well as to participate in showcasing the sport of cornhole at various Backyard initiatives. The goal of the “Hawks” league is multifaceted. Ultimately, the Association and its players would love for all our Backyard Hawks to compete and win events at the Provincial and national levels. However, everyone enjoys the social camaraderie, support, coaching and guidance in each other’s game play, skills, and strategy provided by players in this tier.
