Season one of The Beginner Night is in the books and MRS. CLUTCH Joann P. came through again to take the top spot. She double-dipped Ray, who was sitting in the King Seat, to be crowned season one champion. Murray won the season standings with 13 wins, but Michelle, Ray, and Lorne were not far behind with 11. Congratulations to everyone who played this season, and hopefully, our next season will be just as successful.

TOP PPR – WEDNESDAY

  • Michelle – 4.76
  • Joann P – 4.57
  • Lorne P 4.4

On Tuesday the Hawk’s and the Pigeons were flying in the singles play. Tuesday is a bit more competitive than our Wednesday night and the PPR’s are steadily going up in both of these tiers.  In the Pigeon tier, The Kid was on a mission. Lucas came out of the gates fast and did not look back. Maybe he was out to prove me wrong that I moved Oopsidacey ahead of him in the power rankings, but whatever it was he sure made a statement going undefeated on the night to win. Shawn gave him a great test in the final but came up a bit short.

TOP PPR –

  • The Kid – 7.12
  • Ducky Man – 6.74
  • Shawn – 6.07

In the tier 3, twelve Hawks were soaring inside the Backyard looking to take the win. After the round-robin Newson and Parker were the only two players that did not lose, but neither of them had the best PPR. In the round-robin Glenny was firing a 8.84 PPR and sitting with a 2-1 record. Once we hit the bracket it was clear Glenny was not going to be denied this win. He kept his groove and throwing an impressive 9 PPR in the bracket, he went undefeated to take the win. Patches firing an impressive 8.64 PPR in the bracket did not have enough to take down Glenny. Great throwing.

TOP PPR –

  • Glenny – 8.93
  • Patches – 8.66
  • Newson – 8.18

Finally, I want to talk about our Monday night at Backyard. I am unsure if you noticed a trend in the tiers, but our ladies are killing it in every tier. Every week, we have a lady making waves in one of the tiers. This week, Joann won the season on Wednesday. We have 5 premier Tier 3 throwers who can win it all on any night. Tier 4 is often the site of a lady winning. I really truly believe this is a testament to our Monday night Ladies Night with most of our ladies starting in this event. It is a great atmosphere and place to learn, and we have a great mix of ladies of all types and skill levels. Our advanced Tier Ladies come out and help teach, which allows our new players to learn from some of the best, not only lady throwers but the best throwers in the country. So, calling all ladies of every skill level, come out on Mondays, and there will be a place for you as we build a province of the best female throwers in the country.

Tier 4 POWER Ranking:

FIRST: THE KID – BACK ON TOP with an impressive undefeated night on Tuesday. Let us see if he can stay in this spot.

SECOND: DUCKY MAN—Stewie had a good Tuesday and is steadily improving. I predict he will be in the top spot relatively soon.

THIRD: MARLA— Marla did not play this week so she will stay in third

FOURTH: OOPSIDACEY— Mike struggled on Tuesday, dropping him to the fourth spot.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

SHAWN C: With a great showing on Tuesday, Shawn moves into the rankings this week.

LYNETTE: She stays in the rankings. It will be interesting to see what she can do next week in singles play.

RINGO: Stays put with an ok week.

Tier 3 POWER Ranking:

FIRST: PATCHES—NEW NUMBER ONE ALERT—Patches moves into the number one spot. I know he did not win on Tuesday due to a hot Glenny, but he did enough for me to move him into the number one spot. Andrew beat my number one on Tuesday on his way to the second-place finish, and for me, that is enough to move him up.

SECOND: NEWSON—Kevin is always right there in the standings and the top PPR. Kevin will eventually be back in the top spot, but it will be fun to see how long it takes.

THIRD: KASSIGAN—I was in Saskatoon last week playing in the Saskatoon league, and Kass is a force to be reckoned with. He is excited to defend his Regional title in November. He won Wednesday in Saskatoon, and he stays in my rankings.

FOURTH: GLENNY—We cannot ignore Tuesday’s domination. I moved him into the top four, and if Glenny can consistently find his play like Tuesday, he will not be here for long.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

PRESLEY: Did NOT play this week

CRYSTAL – Crystal, with a second finish in Saskatoon, stays on my watch list

KRENTZY – moves down into the players to watch category this week.

My name is Kevin Bittman, and I am on the board of the SCA and a member of the Backyard Pigeon Coop. I have been playing cornhole for a couple of years, and I would say I am not great, but I try to get better every week. Cornhole, for me, is a fantastic community of people that, no matter your skill level, you can come out and have fun at the Backyard at the SCA. The blog is my opinion and how I see things in Regina’s cornhole scene. It is meant to be a way to keep people engaged in what is going on at the Backyard and the SCA. My hope is we can continue growing the game in Regina and Saskatchewan. The Backyard at the SCA is located at 2363 2nd Avenue in Regina. The venue has eight regulation cornhole lanes and a bar and kitchen. Each week, the Backyard hosts events for all skill levels, and I will attempt to highlight some of these events and give my perspective on the club and the players in Saskatchewan.
