Wow, is the backyard pumping! With something going on every day from now until January, the Backyard at the SCA is the place to be. You do not want to miss out, and wow, what a weekend. Once again, the SCA was living up to its Mission Statement to give back to the Communities we play in. On Saturday night, we hosted a fundraiser for Autism and Kids First Day Care. It was a sold-out event, and man, it was an amazing event for such a great cause.

DID YOU KNOW that the SCA and the Backyard helped community organizations raise over $70,000 in the first year of operation? The Backyard at the SCA is more than just a place to play cornhole but is an organization that is looking to change our communities through the game of cornhole. We are looking to use cornhole to help our community and we have only just begun. The SCA, from time to time, also hosts fundraisers to give to organizations that need help.

On November 16, 2024, as we head into the Christmas season, we are hosting a fundraiser for the FOOD BANK. Life for many people is becoming increasingly difficult. More and more people rely on the Food Bank to feed their families. Even some parents with jobs need the FOOD BANK to provide food for their families.

On November 16, I hope our cornhole family can come out and support our Regina Food Bank. So get onto Scoreholio, register, and see what we can do for our community.

Newbie/Beginners Night on Wednesday was the last week of season one. Next week we will play the finals but this does not mean it is over. On October 30, 2024 we will start the next six week season. In the last week before the finals, Long Haul Louie and Ray double-dipped Lorne and Murray to take down the win. All these players’ progress is amazing to see. In just six weeks of play, the PPR steadily rose.

Top PPR:

  • Long Haul Louie – 5.39
  • Quinten – 5.19
  • Murray – 4.96

Tuesday was also Blind draw doubles night, and in tier 4, Lucas and Bill were the team on the run. After being knocked to the B-side by Ducky Man (Stewie) and Oopsidacey (Mike), they outran Wendy and Marla for another chance at Ducky Man and Oopsidacey. If they wanted to keep the bounty money, they would have to double-dip the duo. When it was all done, Ducky Man and Oopsidacey went undefeated in the bracket, winning not only the night but also the $70 bounty money.

Tier 4 Top PPR:

  • Oopsidacey – 7.05
  • Marla – 6.65
  • Lynette – 6.63

In tier 3, the winning team also went undefeated. Crystal and Patches Beat Dean and Newson to win the night. Bonnie P. and I were picked to be the team on the run, and everyone else was the bounty hunters. We struggled with bag selection, and in the end, Newson and Dean took down the bounty when they knocked us out of the tourney.

Tier 3 Top PPR:

  • Newson – 8.25
  • Kim – 8.19
  • Patches – 8.05

Power Rankings are tricky this early in the year, and I have not had as much time to write about every week’s winners, but I have looked to see who is firing early in the season.  It has been a fun start to the season because we have seen the Penguins moving to the Pigeon division and some jumped right up to the Hawk division.  We have also seen a few Pigeons move to fly with the Hawks.  Everyone is settling in nicely, and each tier is very competitive.

Tier 4 POWER Ranking:

With just a quick week of doubles, not much has changed, and with the Backyard Cup coming up it will be interesting to see who ends up on which team. These are my power ranking for this week.

FIRST: OOPSIDACEY— Mike, with the top PPR and a win against Lucas on Tuesday, Oopsidacey leaps into the number one spot. It looks like we may have a battle all season with Lucas and Mike.

SECOND: THE KID – Lucas is knocked down to the number two spot, but I have a feeling next week in singles he will have something to say about it.

THIRD: MARLA— Marla bumps down to third with Oopsidacey’s great week. Marla had the second-best PPR behind Mike.

FOURTH: DUCKY MAN—Stewie is always one to watch and really has the potential to be flying with the Hawks by Christmas. With a win on Tuesday, he leaps into my top four.

FIFTH: For the fifth spot this year, I will give you three names that I feel are on the edge of breaking into the top four.

LYNETTE:  She stays in the rankings. It will be interesting to see what she can do next week in singles play.

RINGO: stays put with an ok week.

JOE P— Out of the top 4 but still high in my rankings. Joe can go on a run at any point and be the person to beat.

Tier 3 POWER Ranking:

FIRST: NEWSON – Kevin was lucky this was doubles week, because after a Patches win this week this race for first and second is a dead heat. Singles next week could be the tell-tale sign of who belongs in the top spot.

SECOND: PATCHES – Andrew is in 1.5 spot because of his win on Tuesday.

THIRD: KASSIGAN— Stays in my top four, until the next time we see him in play

FOURTH: KRENTZY— Singles play this week should help determine which way Parker goes.

FIFTH:

PRESLEY:  She is always one of the top PPRs and has already won a Regional this year. Deciding where she should be in the rankings is tough, but she is always a force when she comes out.

CRYSTAL – Crystal is always on my radar, and with a win on Tuesday she made my list.

KIM—Kim is third in the single standings and fired the second-best PPR on Tuesday. She rounds out the fifth spot, which is filled by three fantastic ladies throwers.

My name is Kevin Bittman, and I am on the board of the SCA and a member of the Backyard Pigeon Coop.  I have been playing cornhole for a couple of years, and I would say I am not great, but I try to get better every week.  Cornhole, for me, is a fantastic community of people that, no matter your skill level, you can come out and have fun at the Backyard at the SCA. The blog is my opinion and how I see things in Regina’s cornhole scene. It is meant to be a way to keep people engaged in what is going on at the Backyard and the SCA.  My hope is we can continue growing the game in Regina and Saskatchewan. The Backyard at the SCA is located at 2363 2nd Avenue in Regina.  The venue has eight regulation cornhole lanes and a bar and kitchen. Each week, the Backyard hosts events for all skill levels, and I will attempt to highlight some of these events and give my perspective on the club and the players in Saskatchewan.
