The last few weeks have marked the end of Season Two for all our leagues.

I want to start with Learn to Play, Beginner/Newbie, Tier 5 night. This night is precisely what the name suggests when we talk about the progression of players on this night. When new people come on Wednesday night, we have people on hand to set them on the right track to throwing a good bag, which helps them get better every week. By the end of a short season, everyone on this night is throwing a flat bag, and some are in the position where they are ready for Tier 4 on Tuesday night.

Wednesday night is the future of our club. The next season starts on Jan 15, 2025, and I need your help to fill it. I need you, as players and/or followers of our league, to spread the word that Wednesday is the night to come and learn how to play if you want to improve your skills. It will run for nine weeks, and the cost is $100 for the season.

Here is the pitch: Come out on Wednesday, and we will work with your technique to give you the skills to get better at cornhole. It doesn’t matter why you want to get better. You may want to dominate at the lake next year, or maybe you may want to get better for Friday night Funholio, regardless of what it is, we know Wednesday night is the night to make it happen. The group is very inviting and helpful; once you get here, you will enjoy the progression of your game.

Tier 5 final night was on Wednesday night. Greg finished the standings with a 10-5 record. Greg was new to the league this season and quickly picked up the game. Greg will receive $130 for being this season’s standings winner. In the final week, Greg had an exceptional win against one of the best in Tier 5, Timmy. Greg fired a 6.89 PPR to secure the standings win.

In the finals for the Tier 5, Murray sat in the King Seat and waited for the winner of Greg and Timmy. Timmy pulled out an early lead and beat Greg to face off against Murray to see who the season champion would be. It was a back-and-forth final, but in the 15th round, Murray fired a 4-bagger to take the victory.

TOP PPR

  • Murray – 5.74
  • Timmy – 5.55
  • Greg – 5.14

Ladies’ night ended for the year with their annual potluck wind-up and award night. Marla was the season standings champion, and she and Dianne won the finals as they beat Brody and Lynette in the final. The award winners were:

  • Glow Girl: Michelle S
  • Most improved: Joann P
  • Coach award: Marla R
  • Sportsmanship award: Lynette B

The next season of Ladies Night begins Jan 06, 2025, alternating singles and doubles week to week. The cost is $100 for singles and $100 per person for doubles. You do not need a partner for doubles; you come as a single and get paired up with another lady.

You will play six weeks of each, and there will be one week of finals for each. So, you will play seven weeks for $100. If you play both, it is $200 for 14 weeks.

Now we head to the Hawks and the Pigeons. Newson beat Glen to take the Hawk division, and The Kid double-dipped Oopsidacey to win the Pigeon division. Kevin has been dominant this season. He has six wins out of 13 weeks and has added a Regional win. He also leads the National Points race.

The Kid has also dominated the pigeon division. He has four league night wins out of nine weeks played and won 50% of the Regionals he played in. Good job, Lucas.

In the Doubles league final, two of the hottest players, Newson and Glen, were teammates in the blind draw on the Hawk side. After the round-robin, however, four teams were sitting with a 2-1 record. Newson and Glen would face Damara and Bonnie P. in bracket play to see who would sit on the throne. Once the game was over, it was determined that tonight’s throne would be a King Seat, as Kevin and Glenny won 21-9. The B-final was an all ladies match as Kim and Crystal made their way to the final, after dropping their first bracket game. They did not waste much time as they continued the roll to beat Damara and Bonnie 21-11. They went up to try and double-dip Glenny and Newson and take the win. Game one was quick as the SCL Ladies won game one 21-5. In game two, the A-side winners pulled out to an early lead and were able to hold on for the doubles championship.

On the Pigeon side of things, The Kid and Lynette were the only teams with an undefeated record, but when they ran into Joe P. in the bracket, they got knocked down to the B-side. Joe was then off to play for the King Seat against Wendy and Andrew. Joe did not let up and won the King Seat game 26-4. Oopsidacey and Ringo worked their way through the B-side and won the B-final, and they were off to play Joe for the season championship. The first game was very close as Ringo and Mike pulled out to an early lead, but Joe stayed in it and ended the comeback when he won 23-20. Great throwing, Joe.

My name is Kevin Bittman, and I am on the board of the SCA and a member of the Backyard Pigeon Coop. I have been playing cornhole for a couple of years, and I would say I am not great, but I try to get better every week. Cornhole, for me, is a fantastic community of people that, no matter your skill level, you can come out and have fun at the Backyard at the SCA. The blog is my opinion and how I see things in Regina’s cornhole scene. It is meant to be a way to keep people engaged in what is going on at the Backyard and the SCA. My hope is we can continue growing the game in Regina and Saskatchewan. The Backyard at the SCA is located at 2363 2nd Avenue in Regina. The venue has eight regulation cornhole lanes, a bar, and kitchen. Each week, the Backyard hosts events for all skill levels, and I will attempt to highlight some of these events and give my perspective on the club and the players in Saskatchewan.
