The Backyard was a vision of a few cornhole fanatics. The vision was to have a place to throw bags whenever we wanted and it has become way more successful than anyone ever thought and is the talk of the town. Fundraisers, Team building, wind-ups, and corporate functions are in high demand and enable us to keep cornhole affordable for our local players. Everything has been a success, but we need your help.
On Wednesday nights, we run our learn-to-play/Beginner night. It has an amazing group that plays every Wednesday, but we have only had 6-10 players come out. We are having trouble getting people to come out and give it a try. So, if you can spread the word to your friends, that would be awesome.I am not sure if the league’s structure is the problem or if people would rather come to a fun Friday night. I am open to suggestions on what may be the problem or ideas on how to get more people out.
This week on our Wednesday night, eight players battled it out in a Switcholio. Everyone is learning fast and getting better by the week. Ralph and his partner Lorne, beat Joann and Murray to win the week.

On Tuesday, we were playing a Blind draw in Tier 3, with Bounty’s on the team of Bobber and Patches, who were knocked down to the B-side in game one of the bracket. Once they were down on the B-side, four teams failed to knock them out and collect the ransom money. With four straight wins, they had to double-dip Newson and Dean if they wanted to keep the bounty money. In the final, they could only muster 3 points as Newson and Dean won the week and the bounty money.
TOP PPR
- Newson – 9.3
- Crystal – 7.87
- Bonnie P – 7.69
In tier 4, the pigeons also played a Blind Draw, and with an odd number Andrew S played as the ghost. Andrew was definitely up to the challenge as he not only went undefeated in the round-robin, but in the bracket as well. The fun part of the evening was Andrew was also the team with the Bounty on its head. So in the end there was only one winner and that was Andrew.

Saturday, the Backyard hosted the third Backyard CUP. Every time we play this event, everyone says it might be our most fun format. We had two teams of 16, battling it out for the cup. Throwaholics, led by Newson, were the two-time defending champions, but standing between them and a threepeat was the Throwbocops, led by myself.
On paper, the teams did not look fair, but cornhole is not played on paper. The Backyard Cup, as I explained before, is like the Ryder Cup in golf. We play four different formats, and every win gets a point. Everyone only throws against others in the same tier but could be partnered with someone of a different tier.
We started with singles, then same tier doubles. then split-tier doubles, and we ended the afternoon with walking doubles. After one event, the Throwbocops were up by two and never looked back on their way to a 40-24 win and the new champions of the Backyard Cup.
We will be having the fourth Backyard Cup in the spring, so keep your eyes open for registration. You do not want to miss it.
