Provincials weekend is only days away, and I wanted to highlight some predictions for each division. I will start with the Thursday Mixed event. This event is one of my favourites because we see some fantastic teams, such as some of the premier female throwers, team up with top-notch male throwers. BitNew and Humble B’s throughout the year were the teams that took turns winning, and I think they will be in the mix again.  A few other teams, though, will have something to say about it.  Hot off a win at the Throwdown, Patches and Bonnie P will be looking to chalk up another win.  Damara and I will also be looking to take down a provincial victory. My prediction for podium finishers in the Mixed event are:

  1. Bitnew
  2. Humble B’s
  3. Belbit the Duo

Saturday at 10 am at the Backyard will be the scene of the Singles Provincial Championship.

In the Hawk division, it has been a three-person race all year.  Jonathan, Spilly, and Newson have spent most of the year in my top three, but as of late, Caesar, Bonnie P, Patches, Glen, and Crystal all have the game to challenge the podium.  This eight is unbelievable for a tier of top players, but it does not end with them.  Presley, Louie, Franco, Dean, Damara, Chad, Rick, and I could also make a run and find ourselves in the finals.  At the end of the competition, I think the top three all year will be the ones on the podium:

  1. Jonathan Harden
  2. Kevin Newson
  3. Spilly

In the Pigeon division, we will see all the players who played 70% of their events in Tier 4 battling it out for the Pigeon Provincial title.  This division has seen a lot of change throughout the year.  At one point, Ritzy and Ringo were a stronghold in the top five, but some players have left them in the dust throughout the year.  When the dust settles though on Saturday, I think the top three will be:

  1. Stich
  2. Bonnie P
  3. Stewie

Pigeon doubles play will be an exciting competition with some new teams forming that will be a practice event for Nationals in BC. Stich and Oopsidacey have been battling it out with Just BS for most of the year, but Kim and Stewie and Jax and Joey will be looking to take the wood from the top two hands.  I will be watching this event closely because the level of play is incredible, but my picks for the win will be:

  1. Jax and Joey
  2. Bonnie and Sarah
  3. Stich and Mike

The Hawks doubles event will be classic, and I predict we will see the winners averaging close to 9.5 PPR as they win the final. A couple of newly formed teams in this division will also make this event one to watch. Jonathan and Spilly, Glen and Louie, Crystal and Presley, and Rick and Patches will be looking to see if they can find the magic to beat the regular teams of Dreamcrushers or Tennessee Whiskey.  The team that I think will be going to BC representing Saskatchewan as Open Doubles champions will be:

  1. Jonathan and Spilly
  2. Crystal and Presley
  3. Dreamcrushers

This event will be fun, and with the entry fee being FREE, there should be no reason we do not have a full house.  The Provincials is a way to celebrate a great season.  There is always talk about PPR and what tiers people should play.  All I can say is that it does not matter what the rules are; players will be at the top, middle, and bottom of any tier.  It would be awesome if everyone could win their tier, but that is not sport.  We have not finalized everything yet for next year, but there is a lot of discussion on moving people up to different tiers.

Remember to bring some friends to the FunHolio on Friday night. For the next three switches, we will offer a $3 glass or a $15 picture of draft beer.

I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

My name is Kevin Bittman, and I am on the board of the SCA and a member of the Backyard Pigeon Coop.  I have been playing cornhole for a couple of years, and I would say I am not great, but I try to get better every week.  Cornhole, for me, is a fantastic community of people that, no matter your skill level, you can come out and have fun at the Backyard at the SCA. The blog is my opinion and how I see things in Regina’s cornhole scene. It is meant to be a way to keep people engaged in what is going on at the Backyard and the SCA.  My hope is we can continue growing the game in Regina and Saskatchewan. The Backyard at the SCA is located at 2363 2nd Avenue in Regina.  The venue has eight regulation cornhole lanes and a bar and kitchen. Each week, the Backyard hosts events for all skill levels, and I will attempt to highlight some of these events and give my perspective on the club and the players in Saskatchewan.
