I was sitting back this week and thinking about what to write in my blog. Last week was my tenth blog since I started writing about the cornhole scene in Saskatchewan. I believe it has been well received, and I enjoy talking about cornhole in Regina. I hope that as 2024 progresses, I can share what’s happening in other leagues across Saskatchewan. Currently, Regina is the only league in Saskatchewan, but players are enjoying the game all over the province. In the New Year, we are excited to work with various groups, helping them formalize their cornhole leagues.
The goal of the Saskatchewan Cornhole Association is to have five leagues operating under the SCA/Cornhole Canada umbrella by the end of 2024. We will provide each of these upcoming leagues with the support they need to run events and build the game of cornhole. The SCA’s mission statement is to grow the game, and the development of these new leagues will set us on a path to accomplish our goals and build the game of cornhole all across Saskatchewan.
The ladies were back at it Monday night for a great night of tossing. Twelve ladies battled it out for this week’s bragging rights. Monday was the last regular season night before the ladies are headed into the playoffs for Season One. This new league has been fantastic, and on Monday, four ladies shot over a 5 PPR. Lynette led the way, going 4-0 in the round-robin, but Amber and Dawn ended the night, double-dipping Jennifer and Marla to take the victory.
Watching the success of the Monday Night Fun Night, I really hope that people running the BackYard plan a ladies event where all the ladies can come out and play against each other. Seeing all the top lady throwers playing in a ladies-only event would be fun to watch. It would be equally exciting to see the lower-tier throwers competing against each other. When I do my blog every week, the numbers the SCL Ladies are putting up are fantastic, and to see an event where they could compete against each other would be lots of fun to watch.
Tuesday night was Doubles League Night.
In Tier 4, we saw one familiar face with Bonnie P in the winner’s circle. Her partner (and daughter), Sarah, joined her as “Just BS.” Bonnie and Sarah lost early in the A side but did not look back as they mowed down the competition to double-dip Stich and Oopsidacey (Ain’t My Fault) to win the night. “Just BS” only gave up 14 points in their last four games of the night.
Tier 3 saw Spilly and Louie (Backdoor Bandits) have a rough round-robin play. However, as the old saying goes, “the title is not handed out in the round-robin” came true because they were untouchable once they hit the bracket. Only giving up 30 points in the entire bracket, they beat Newson and Parker (Dream Crushers) to win the night.
Wednesday afternoon, the seniors came out to hone their skills. Dean and Darlene beat Kevin F and Dianne to win the Wednesday afternoon battle. Twelve seniors played in the competition; it was a great afternoon. Big thanks to Newson for taking the time every Wednesday to ensure the senior league plays.
Friday night’s Fun Night celebrated GMA JO’s 70th birthday party. Joanne’s friends and family came out to celebrate her birthday. Joanne strongly advocates for the club and takes great pride in her game. Her game has been steadily improving, and she often welcomes new players and gives them guidance where needed. It was a picture-perfect night as 70 players battled it out for the win. Ultimately, with Glen’s help, the birthday girl was victorious, taking down first place. I’m not sure GMA JO can drink that much every night, but she threw fire with all the aiming fluid. Great night!
POWER RANKING
The TIER 3 power ranking.
1ST – Krentzy – Parkers stays at number one.
2ND – Newson – Maintains his spot at number two. Kevin and Parker teamed up in doubles this week and ended up in second. The second-place finish made me think twice about whether the top two should be dropped down, but I decided against it.
3RD – Spilly – Dylan played himself back into the top three with great tossing in Tuesday’s doubles night. He and his partner make it into the top five with some steady throwing.
4TH – Jonathan – Jonathan did not throw this week, but Spilly showed enough Tuesday to move past him in the rankings.
5TH – Louie – Making his first appearance in the top five, Louie pulls into the fifth spot. I mentioned Louie as one of those players to watch if he played more. Louie has always been a tough player to play, and now that he is coming out more regularly, I am curious to see if he can move up in the rankings.
The Tier 4 power ranking
1ST – Ringo – Regan stays number one because I want to see if he can hold his spot playing singles this week. He finished third in Doubles but had the highest average PPR during Tuesday’s play at 7.11.
2ND – Bonnie – Bonnie took her game to the next level, throwing a 9.75 PPR in game one of the finals on Tuesday. She followed it up with a 7.8 PPR in game two. Those numbers are impressive, but even more so that they were against Stich, last week’s number 2.
3RD – Stich – Jason drops to number 3 solely because of the beatdown he took in the finals. I am sure Jason will rebound in Tuesday’s singles play. This is the last single play before the Regional at the end of the month.
4TH – Ritzy – Danny struggled a bit this week. Maybe he was still hungover from the Friday before, but he will still be in my fourth spot.
5TH – Sarah – I had Oopsidacey and Sarah tied in the fifth spot last week. Seeing them facing off against each other in the Doubles final was sweet. In both games, Sarah got the best of the matchup, which has her sitting in fifth spot by herself this week. Good shooting, Sarah.
